AN Irip (b. 1990, Seoul, South Korea) explores the potential of 'cognitive delay' in painting, countering the accelerated image consumption of digital interfaces. He constructs a 'visual brake' that prevents visual information from evaporating into immediate data upon hitting the retina, instead forcing it to encounter physical resistance on the canvas.
In his primary series, 'Ma(間)', Ahn transposes traditional color systems into a contemporary sensibility, maximizing the tension between hue and surface. Notably, the light-absorbing black planes function as invisible devices that nullify perspectival depth, effectively isolating the viewer's gaze at specific points. The cracks and repetitive structures on the surface generate visual noise, obstructing the seamless reception of information. This process compels viewers to deviate from object-oriented seeing and instead witness the very mechanism of perception. Beyond mere variations of the flat plane, Ahn’s work serves as a pictorial research aimed at reclaiming the 'sovereignty of the gaze' lost in an era of image surplus.
